Glossy Photo Paper
A guide for learning about how to find great laser photo paper and other types of paper
Years ago, if you wanted an instant photograph, you would need a Polaroid instant camera. One click, and you would have the snapshot you wanted, even if it wasn’t necessarily the greatest quality. At the time, this was the most state-of-the-art technology. Today, however, it’s even easier. You don’t even need to buy film. All you need is a digital camera, a computer, and a printer with glossy photo paper. One click on the camera, a few clicks of a mouse button, and your memories are preserved forever. And with the right kind of glossy photo paper, your pictures will look absolutely professional.
Of course, not all your pictures will look so great on glossy photo paper. It depends what you are looking for. Some photos specifically look better on matte photo paper. But the choice is essentially yours. You just need to test out different variations by printing a few photos on several pieces of paper and seeing what works out best.
Then you have to make sure to match your glossy photo paper with your printer. Which kind of printer do you have? Is it laser or inkjet? Make sure to buy the kind of paper that is compatible with your printer, or you could end up in serious trouble. If you, for example, bought inkjet glossy photo paper and used it with your laser printer, you might find that you are left with either a terrible mess or a broken printer. This is because the heat generated by the fuser inside the laser printer would melt the toner and finish on inkjet glossy photo paper, which could cause much damage.
Several well known companies produce glossy photo paper, the most famous of which are Canon, HP, and Epson. Prices differ between them, so you should do your research to find out which type of glossy photo paper is for you.
Features to look for are whether the glossy photo paper is double or single sided, quick or slow dry, and whether it is coated with resin. Remember that you also do not need to limit your use of the paper to photographs. Perhaps you are making invitations to a wedding, for example, and you want them to be durable souvenirs. In this case, you could use the printer to produce a beautiful invitation with a professional photograph on the outside and a text written in the most stunning calligraphy on the inside. The glossy finish would make it an invitation to remember. Another, similar use for it is to create your own personalized greeting cards, with photographs or graphics printed on the cover and a lovely poem within.
When choosing between matte and glossy photo paper, think about whether you want the end result to have the glare of gloss. Also look at the high color resolution and feel the smooth finish. Is this what you want at the end of the day?
Whatever you decide, you will probably enjoy the end results, as glossy photo paper continues to develop in quality.
